What this calculator cannot see

The number above assumes your only income is a salary and your only deduction is retirement. That describes almost nobody. Every item below changes the answer, sometimes by a great deal, and none of them are in the calculation:

  • A travel allowance and the logbook against it
  • Home office expenses
  • A rental property, particularly one running at a loss
  • Commission income and the expenses you may claim against it
  • Freelance or second income, and provisional tax on it
  • Out of pocket medical expenses under section 6B
  • Donations to a section 18A public benefit organisation
  • Capital gains on a property, shares or crypto
  • Foreign income, or income earned while working abroad
  • A retirement or severance lump sum
  • Assessed losses carried forward
  • An auto assessment SARS has already issued you
